Created in an old elementary school next to all-natural dairy farms, TUNA-KAI is the passion project of a couple in Hokkaido, Japan. They met a young child who is allergic to the petroleum-based materials of commercial crayons, and insisted on creating an all-natural, chemical-free, crayon for all children to enjoy.
Each crayon is hand-made from plants or shells, and infused with natural beeswax, then dried for a month. Although the crayon looks dull, when used, the vivid color will come out on paper.
TUNA-KAI is from the AINU language, the natives of Japan. It means “Reindeer” and was named by their 4 year old son.
